Unit 16 Film and Video Editing Techniques
Marking Criteria

Aim & Purpose
Parallel editing:
Technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen simultaneously but in different locations.
An example:
From this video, it shows different examples of parallel editing techniques. in the first 30 seconds we are shown a close up shot of a man, and in the background, the camera shows the police officers with guns in their hand stalking around the house. Following after this scene it cuts back to the man shown in the beginning of this video. This is an example of parallel editing.
Kuleshov effect:
Through his experiences and research, Kuleshov discovered that depending on how shots are assembled the audience will attach a specific meaning or emotion to it.
An example:
When the video is first played it shows the first effect; it opens up with a female walking the streets, she then pauses and looks across the street at another female sat down on a bench eating ice cream. The video momentarily stays on the female eating ice cream, then goes to the female across the street. The female stares intensely as the female across the street, this is the Kuleshov effect as the ice cream is what the female across the street desires.
Speech:
Intro:
Hi there! My name is Theo and today... I'm going to be talking about editing techniques.
First, you gotta know this, there aer many different editing techniques... Here let me have a run down on them.
You got the:
- Match cut
- Elipses
- Jump Cut
- Transitional swipe
- Parallel editing
- Effective reaction shots
- and the Kuleshov effect
Now, let me choose two different techniques...
Parallel Editing:
The technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen simultaneously but in different locations.
As you can see in this music video, you see the main character walking around TST. Since parallel editing is a technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen simultaneously in different locations, you have the band playing in a studio...
Watch this clip and I will point out the parallel editing being used.

Kuleshov effect:
Through his experiences and research, Kuleshov discovered that depending on how shots are assembled the audience will attach a specific meaning or emotion to it.
When the video is first played it shows the first effect; it opens up with a female walking the streets, she then pauses and looks across the street at another female sat down on a bench eating ice cream. The video momentarily stays on the female eating ice cream, then switches to the female across the street.
The female across the street stares intensely at the female eating the ice cream. This is the Kuleshov effect as the ice cream is what the female across the street desires.
